A big event for all cross-country ski lovers in My World took place this weekend. On Sunday the 7th of March the cross-country ski marathon, Vasaloppet, took place. Over 50.000 skiers carried through the world's oldest and longest ski race with a 90-kilometre long distance between Sälen and Mora in Sweden. This year the Swedish skier Jörgen Brink won the race after four hours, two minutes, 59 seconds. Vasaloppet was first held in 1922 and is based on the attempt by Gustav Vasa in 1522 to gather peasants for a revolt against the occupying Danes. Vasa fled when he got no support. The people of Mora changed their minds and sent their two best skiers to bring Vasa back, and they found him near Sälen. He returned to lead the Swedes to independence, and was later proclaimed king. The Vasaloppet follows the same course as Gustav Vasa took. Nils "Mora Nisse" Karlsson born 25 juni 1917 in Mora, Dalarna is a very famous cross-country skier from Sweden. He won a gold medal in the Olympic winter games 1948 in the fifty-kilometre race, bronze medal for the same distance in the world championship 1950 and a total of 37 Swedish championships. He joined the Vasaloppet ten times and won nine of them. He made the Vasaloppet to a famous big competition.

I enjoyed reading the history behind this event! The hat looks like it would keep head and ears very warm outdoors!
Great post. Must be a well attended event from the sidelines.
Fab photo. 4 hour plus - amazing!
What a great event. Loved the hat.
Such a long race. Beautiful red hat. Good capture!
A very strenuous sport, especially over such long distances. Nice to see you have so many very fit people.
Great shot of his red hat!
The cross-country event is very tough. When I was young, in Switzerland, I tried it but I preferred the down-hill and the slalom. After 90km, the competitors must be exhausted.
50,000! Wow. It's amazing. Great post.
